Alexander Technique Through the Lens of Osteoporosis

Come explore current osteoporosis science, fracture risk, movement precautions, and practical language/skills to support AT for bone health.

How can AT practitioners better serve the millions of people living with osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis affects more than 200 million people worldwide, yet many AT teachers have received little formal education about the disease, current fracture risk guidelines, or how to communicate effectively with this growing population. In this interactive workshop, we'll explore current osteoporosis science, common movement precautions, and practical ways to translate Alexander Technique principles into language that resonates with people living with osteoporosis and the healthcare professionals who support them. Together, we'll examine how many core Alexander Technique procedures including Constructive Rest, Going onto the toes, sit-to-stand, the Position of Mechanical Advantage, balance, and coordinated movement already align with strategies that may help reduce fall and fracture risk.

We'll also discuss where AT fits within today's evidence-based approach to osteoporosis management, including the important roles of progressive resistance (weight) training, impact (jump) training, balance, and functional movement. Participants will be introduced to safe, beginner-level weight-bearing and impact exercises and will leave with practical ideas for integrating current bone health science into their teaching.

Whether you work with people who have low bone density or simply want to be better prepared to support clients with osteopenia or osteoporosis, this workshop will provide an accessible foundation for expanding your knowledge and confidence and help you recognize that you already teach many principles of fracture risk reduction.

Please be prepared with:
